 W.O.R.K. PROGRAM AGAIN IMPROVES COUNTY

The Work Opportunities Reaching Kids (W.O.R.K.) Program is again making numerous improvements throughout the county during the summer months.

As part of the Summer Youth Program operated out of the Guernsey County Opportunity Center, the W.O.R.K. Program consists of Community Project Teams that are working on a variety of improvement projects in a number of communities during the summer.

This year, the program was able to support two crews – one that travels the county, and one that is dedicated to the City of Cambridge, working in the City Park and various sites within the city.  The Crew Leaders are Chris Roman and Jason Linn.

Other improvement project sites include Senecaville, Buffalo, Byesville, Old Washington, Guernsey County Department of Job and Family Services, Guernsey County Fairgrounds, Kimbolton, Cumberland, Fairview, Lore City and Salesville.

A total of 12 youths are part of the crews, and the creation of the second crew this summer was made possible in part with funds that were received through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (The Stimulus Bill).  These funds are designed with an emphasis on serving low-income, displaced and under-skilled adults and disconnected youth; with a focus on “green” jobs’ placement and work experiences.

Among the duties that are being completed by the crews include painting, mowing and weed trimming, trash pick-up, and general clean-up, among others.

The W.O.R.K. Program is an eight-week program that began on June 22 and will continue through August 14.

Youth Coordinators for the Summer Youth Program include Jen Woodby, summer intern, and Debbie Scott and Vonda Buckey of the Guernsey County Opportunity Center.

Overall, the Summer Youth Program employs 104 eligible youth ages 14 – 21, who are placed at 55 worksites throughout the county.  This also includes an additional work crew of 12 who are located at Salt Fork State Park as part of a special partnership between the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, the Guernsey County Opportunity Center, and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

The Opportunity Center, which is a division of the Guernsey County Department of Job and Family Services, provides an integrated system of workforce services to employers and individuals seeking training, education, and employment.
