Youth
Youth 14-21 will find the Guernsey County Opportunity Center
has year-round youth activities that focus on academic and occupational
learning.
Males between 18 - 21 are required to
register with the
Selective Service to be eligible for our services.
Career Exploration: Is an
in-school activity that gives students the opportunity to earn while they learn.
Work activities include cafeteria food preparation, serve and clean-up;
clerical; general maintenance; and janitorial.
Academic Incentive: Is an in-school activity that encourages greater academic
performance; consistent class attendance; positive attitudes and behaviors; and
enhances interpersonal relationship skills. Monetary incentives are based on
each nine weeks grading period.
Proficiency Preparation: Is an in-school tutoring program that enhances proficiency
test knowledge leading to test success. Class schedules can be custom designed
for each school. Eligible participants may earn a stipend designed to encourage
attendance. Parent involvement is required. Tutors receive payment through
contract services. Monetary incentives are based on attending sessions,
attending the parent orientation, and passing the proficiency test.
Guernsey Youth Leadership: Is a program created to offer youth an opportunity to enhance
their skills in leadership. This group is selected from the Summer Employment
Experience program. During this 7 week program, the group hears from community
leaders and visits local businesses. Some of the businesses involved in the past
have been AVC Communications, Detroit Diesel, Colgate/Palmolive, Southeastern
Ohio Regional Medical Center, Guernsey County Airport, The Daily Jeffersonian,
Guernsey County Department of Job and Family Services, and the Guernsey County
Sheriff's Department. Youth will visit area educational facilities such as Zane
State and Muskingum College. A graduation program is offered at the end of the
Leadership Program with speakers present to make the program a true success in
the community.
